It was then that they became aware of a few Master Weavers from Tibet, who had the skills and know-how of the construction and manufacturing of Tibetan Carpets. There were seminars and training held to teach the rest of the refugees on how to weave and manufacture carpets, thus giving birth to the carpet industry in Nepal. Master Weaver’s first generation were trained in the manufacturing of carpets through the Swiss Red Cross’s initiative to bring Tibetan carpet manufacturing to Nepal. Fast forward more than 40 years, we at Master Weaver have kept the culture and tradition of the Tibetan Carpet alive and continually push the boundaries of the Tibetan Carpet to new heights with the aim of constantly evolving the art form by manufacturing extremely fine and bespoke Tibetan carpets. Our goal is to be the leaders in creating heirloom master pieces of Tibetan Carpets that will last generations to come.

Our Story

During the 1960’s, Tibetan refugees had poured into Nepal. The Swiss Red Cross in conjunction with the Nepalese government assisted the refugees with their integration in Nepal and also helping the refugees become self-sufficient.

Tibetan Weaving

Historians believe that the art of carpet weaving in Tibet had already flourished throughout the 7th to the 9th century, when Tibetan political and cultural influence reached lands far beyond the boundaries of the Tibetan plateau. Earliest evidence of its existence was found at the Silk Road outpost of Miran, presently in Xinjiang, where Tibetan wool pile rug fragments were excavated dating back to the 7th century..
